In SOME cases, there may be lists of serial numbers that are tied to a given year. Some Marlin rifles have a letter prefix to the serial number. Remington used a letter series stamped on barrels that indicate day and month of manufacture. Some companies have records of production by serial number. Sometimes it can only be narrowed down to the years that THAT model was made. There is no one answer for all firearms.

If you look in some firearm resale guides, it will usually tell you the years the gun was manufactured. If you write to shooting magazines, they usually have the resources to find out the year of manufacture for you.
The VIN number will identify the year of manufacture.
The 10th digit is the year of manufacture.
