"Can you run a swimming pool pump too long?" The answer is "Yes" if you have a pump which is too small for the pool or a pump which is not made for continual use. To be on the safe side and save money you can do the following: 1. Buy a pump that will handle a little larger load than needed. 2. Run the pump on minimum setting when not in use. Running the pump continuously does take alot of electricity; if you wish to save on electricity buy a dual speed pump with a high low setting. When the pool is in use or while vacuuming put the pump on high but at night or when it is not in use place it one low, this lowers the electric bill and prevent heavier sediments from going to the bottom and prevents the filter from doing its job and you vacuuming more than you would like. The steady circulation also allows for a consistent spread of the pool chemicals and keeps it clear for everyday use.
As long as the pump is pumping water you can run it 24 hours a day. These motors are designed to run continuous. If you were to allow the pump to run dry the mechanical seal would overheat and then leak. Normally it is not necessary to run continuously if your system is properly sized, however I run mine 24 hours a day. Keeps the water moving, and skimming leaves and debris before they sink to the bottom.
