In regards to comfort and safety while swimming, yes a hose can be too long. Also, the hose might also be able to tangle and/or not allow the cleaner to move correctly and to its full reach. Lastly, The suction power needed for a longer hose would be greater; to measure suction the vacuum might have come with a neat gadget that reads this and tells you the optimal level of suction. It's best to remove it when swimming to avoid getting tangled up in the hose. Lay the hose out straight to avoid permanent twists in hose. Otherwise, leave the cleaner in all the time. It will only run when your system is turned on, which is usually 4 -10 hours a day, depending on the time of year.
Try bringing the weight that fits around the hose a little closer to the unit'
It should work alright however the blanket may interfere a litle with the movement of the hose at the surface.
