Neptune is the Roman god of the sea, often referred to being the Roman equivalent of Poseidon, the Greek god of the sea, with Poseidon being the basis for King Triton in Disney's The Little Mermaid. Though there is a connection, it is not a pure one, as Neptune has other ties, such as to Salacia who could be said to be the Roman goddess of salt water.

Poseidon is the Greek god of the sea, horses and earthquakes. He rules the sea and controls how it behaves, whipping up storms when he is angry or upset, and creating horses from the seafoam when he is in a lighter mood. He also creates earthquakes when he is angry and is sometimes known as the Earth Shaker.
Poseidon was born as a god during the 4th age, the age of the Titans. He is one of six children born to Kronos and Rhea, who were both Titans. It was prophesied that Kronos would be overthrown by his sons so, to prevent this from happening, Kronos ate all of his children by Rhea as soon as they were born.
Because the children - Poesidon, Hades, Demeter, Hestia and Hera - were gods they did not die when they were eaten, but remained fully alive inside their father. When Rhea bore her sixth son, Zeus, to Kronos, she hid him so that he would be safe. When Zeus grew old enough he tricked his father into disgorging his siblings and they all re-appeared, unharmed.
Kronos was eventually overthrown by his sons and then Zeus ruled the sky, Poseidon ruled the oceans and Hades ruled the underworld.
Symbols associated with Poseidon include the trident and dolphins. His Roman name was Neptune.

Neptune is part of the Roman Pantheon of Gods. In Greek mythology he is known as Poseidon.
He is the brother of Jupiter, Pluto, Hera, Vesta and Demeter. He is uncle to Venus, Mars, Athena and Apollo.
Most of the Gods were related to one another so the list of his relations is pretty long. I've only included the most well known.
