When the acetylene is pumped into the tank, it dissolves in the acetone, much like CO2 dissolving in a bottle of soda. If the tanks are laid on their sides, the acetone will be forced out into the hoses and torch. You will get a strange flame with a lot of excess carbon. Tanks that have been laid down should be stood up, and left in that position for at least an hour so that the acetone moves back towards the bottom of the spongy material.
