filling with water will dilute the acid just fine ,, if the pH level is still high add sodium bicarbonate,(baking soda)

I totally disagree with the above answer. Unless the local fire company is filling the pool and the truck is on-site the very minute the acid washing is completed, you must neutralize the acid. Even then, unless the pool holds less than 5500 gallons (the size of the delivery), you still need to neutralize with TSP (tri-sodium-phosphate). Muriatic acid can reek havoc on marcite given enough time, so I recommend TSP every time, without exception. -Bill

Steps to acid wash inground pool without draining water?

acid washing pools take a lot of life out of the plaster and can make it rough. What I would do first is try a suspended acid wash. first bypass heater if there is one lower pH and let pool circulate a day or two then bring water back to correct balance. This usually removes stains and does the entire pool evenly without streaks and roughness

The water was clear when first put in pool then you added the chlorine and pH ballanced the next day the water was chocolate what do you do next?

Sounds as if you did not filter the pool water for at least 24 hours before adding chlorine. You also may have added too much chlorine at one time. That brown is iron and if you did not react to it immediately it will most likely be somewhat perminant. If pool is plaster a light acid wash will usually correct. The acid wash can be done in two ways; with the water in the pool, sometimes called a no drain acid wash or pump out water and acid wash in the regular manner. Must be professionally done. Sorry to hear of you rmisfortune. Ken

How can you vacuum the 'junk' from the bottom of an inground pool which has been neglected for about 2 years?

Vacuum the pool to waste and/or empty the pool and shovel out the gunk. Sounds like the pool needs to be emptied anyway, so give it a chlorine wash (or acid wash) while its empty and then refill, add salt, install the necessary equipment and start over with a saline pool.
