Like most deer, moose have hollow hair for insulation. This makes them extremely hard to sink. They have broad hooves to prevent their sinking in snow and mud. The combination gives them a decent forward speed in still water by using a simple 'dog paddle'.

Because Moose eat mainly plants that grow under water. Also to escape the flys and other biting bugs. Or to just get across to the other side.
