In the strait of Salamis 480 BCE, where the Persian war fleet was defeated by the Greek. Loss of naval superiority exposed Xerxes' sea supply line and he had to take half his army home, the other half having to withdraw to Thessaly for the winter as the country south could not support his cavalry.

Also, with the threat of amphibious invasion of their cities gone, the cities of the Peloponnese were able to release their armies the following summer 479 BCE to concentrate at Plataia where they defeated the Persian army and its Greek allies. At the same time, the Greek fleet destroyed the remnant of the Persian fleet at Mykale and so the Persian threat collapsed.
