What is the difference between the shift and battle style in Pokemon?

Shift is when after you faint a Pokemon the game asks you if you want to change Pokemon if you have more than one and battle is when you keep the same Pokemon though the whole battle or at least until it faints.

In Pokemon diamond and pearl, u just go to the battle arena, go inside, and there will be 2 PCs (the blue computers) at the sides. Go up to one and click "a" when ur facing it, and a bunch of PCs will come up. Click Bebe's PC or Someone's PC, and u'll see ur Pokemon u caught. Move the hand around using the arrow keys until you get the Pokemon u wantl. Click A, and then click Shift. Go to the bottom and click My Party. Put the Pokemon in an empty spot or if you want it to replace another Pokemon, click A on that pokemons spot and click shift, and then place the Pokemon u don't want in the PC. by the way, when you first click the Pokemon in the PC, you might not have to click shift, it could just move by itself.
