FNaF is Five Nights at Freddy's, a survival horror game series. The player character has the role of a security guard on a night watch, at a family restaurant called Freddy Fazbear's Pizzeria. His job is to keep an eye on the animatronic characters who will roam the venue at night. The problem with this is, if they encounter a person at night, they will assume they are an animatronic 'skeleton' without a suit, and force the person into a suit. This will be a fatal experience due to the nature of the suits.

So, the gameplay involves a stationary character monitoring a series of cameras to keep an eye on the movements of the animatronics. Each has their own nature and 'rules' regarding their movement. 'Bonnie' can move from room to room as if by teleporting, though only ever attacks the player from the left. 'Freddy' meanwhile follows a set pattern towards the player's Office. 'Foxy' will emerge from behind a curtain if he is observed too much, or too little. Gameplay therefore involves learning their patterns and natures and picking up audio cues such as the clattering that lets you know that 'Chica' is in the camera-less kitchen.

The player avoids death from the lurking animatronics by shutting the office doors when you detect an animatronic is right outside. However, the building has a limited and constantly draining power supply. Each action you perform, such as having a door closed, or switching lights on, or using the monitor, will drain the power faster. This is why you could not just close the doors and sit things out indefinitely, the power will drain, the doors will open and you will almost surely die. You have to survive from Midnight to 6am, then the game progresses to the second night, the animatronics becoming more aggressive as each night passes. A secret 6th night becomes available after the 5th, leading to the final 'custom night' in which you can customise the AI for each animatronic.

The game has two sequels and a lot of unanswered questions regarding the background - events are mentioned in passing or by a series of cryptic minigames, but not fully explained. Things such as a daytime attack on someone by one of the animatronics, someone using a special wearable costume to lure and murder children, the possibility that their bodies were put inside suits to 'save' them and are the reason they are 'haunted', and speculation that the killer might have been a security guard too, the reason the animatronics are so hostile towards you.

A 4th game has been announced, and has been said to be the final game in the series. It may explain some of the questions, or just raise more.

How Five Nights at Freddy's Can Actually Be Scary

Despite Five Nights at Freddy's initial popularity being among school-age kids when the first game was released, the game was never really violent. The horror aspect of it came out of fear, not only from the animatronics hunting you but from the helpless feeling you have since you couldn't run away

Upon completing all other levels in the game, Pizza Party will become available. The player is tasked with navigating a maze of rooms to find the titular Pizza Party. In the end, they will enter a room full of cake, pizza, animatronics, and a tape.

No actual violence is shown in the game, but because of the way the game works, you would get the feeling that bad things will happen and you will get killed. When the animatronics jumpscare you, some of them look like they're bitting you.
