If your talking about the paintings that are strewn all around the level, they are just old German movie posters. But there are 5 portraits in the first second floor room. One portrays Richtofen, one for Nicholi, one for Takeo, one for Dempsey, and a blacked out one. You can make the characters talk by going up to them and pressing X or square.
The blacked out one is supposed to represent the "player" or you! hence why there is no face. This is my opinion, but it is nice to think of yourself as the "5th person" :D
