When you enter the circle-on-door houses, move your mouse around the map to figure out where to click, for you do not actually DROP it, you click. However, not click anywhere, for this particular place is in a certain spot. When you cursor shows you the sign of somewhere to click, click and the treasure will go there. This applies the same with the food, but it would be in a different spot
