Mario was created by Shigeru Miyamoto in 1981, in the game Donkey Kong. Since pixels were so large at the time, Mario's character had to be designed in a certain way. A hat was easier to show than hair, and a moustache was easier to show than a face. The colors of his outfit were chosen for high contrast--so that players could distinguish between the character and the background. Originally, Mario was named Jumpman, for obvious reasons. But the landlord of the warehouse where the Donkey Kong arcade games were kept, Mario Segale, demanded rent from Nintendo while the game was being brought to America. After the argument, Nintendo employees decided to rename the character after him.
