World of Warcraft downloads a large number of patches to add new game content and fix bugs/glitches within existing content. In each patch, whether small or large, many improvements and positive changes are made to the world and it's user interface. Buffs are added to existing classes. Sometimes new areas are added in. Dungeons and pvp systems are re-vamped, and overall the game gets easier. If you have problems downloading patches, or if they take a while (more than 1/2 hour) then check your online connection. Something might be wrong with your router, or the game is just adding a lot of new content.
Currently, the game after install is about 33 gigabytes. You could have a little more or less depending on if you have addons installed.

That said, World of Warcraft at the highest settings rivals Aion at low to middle settings.
