Buy armor, shields, and weapon upgrades for your ship. Have Garrus or Miranda lead the other force both times, Tali or Legion go through the vent and Samara or Jack (with upgrades) is you're Biotic. Then for the final part take 2 loyal squad mates and you'll make it. It is ideal to have every squad member loyal, as there will be consequences in ME3 if they are not.

If you don't import a save game from Mass Effect, you will automatically choose the character of the opposite gender to survive.
