Erntedankfest (Harvest Festival of Thanks) German Thanksgiving is in later September to early October Rather than being the big family celebration as in America. It roots back in the harvest days like America, when communities celebrated the end of a successful harvest before winter came.
well..... one fact is that the day we celebrate thanksgiving on isn't really when the pilgrims celebrated it. theirs was probably closer to the harvest season, not winter. ;)
Thanksgiving Day was originally named 'Harvest Festival'. This is because it is a Harvest Festival, which is when the harvest of the crops is celebrated. In England a Harvest Festival is still celebrated, but it is solely a Church Celebration, unlike in the U.S. and Canada which recognises it as a National Holiday. For more information, see the related link.
The Pilgrims were Christians who celebrated Thanksgiving in November to give thanks to G-D for the harvest they had, and all the food they gathered which would feed them through the winter and into next year, when their next harvest was.

Thanksgiving is for everyone. The American holiday, Thanksgiving, is simply a day for giving thanks for all the things you cherish, including family and friends. Traditionally, it was for giving thanks for a bountiful harvest. The fall season is when most crops are harvested, prior to the onset of winter.
Australians don't celebrate Thanksgiving in the same sense as Americans. They have a national day of Thanks, in which you thank others and God for that which you are, well, thankful for. However, Australia is a country founded to house convicts. They never had to survive a harsh winter (even in the south the winter is still quite warm compared to Mass.) and they never held a speific religious convition to forming their own country - it was simply easier to stay there after they had finished their term of punishment. Thus, they don't celebrate Thanksgiving in way that one would suspect.
