Go to edit profile in the launcher before you start up the game and under "select version" you can check the box next the "allow beta mincraft versions (2010-2011). Then all you have to do it select the beta version you want under "use version" (the beta versions are at the bottom of the list). Hope that helps :D.

You can download it from the website. For Linux distributions, some repositories may already have it available and you can just install from there directly.

If there is an update it will tell you after you load up the game. When it asks you if you want to update press yes.
