How do you beat virus attack on poptropica?

Virus Hunter Island is the 35th Poptropica Island, released September 26, 2013. It involves a trip inside the human body to find and contain a dangerous virus. It was the first island designed for the New Scheme, including a larger play window, background sound, and sound effects. There was Early Access for paid monthly members on August 29, 2013. Unfortunately, not everything was working properly at that time.

This solution contains all spoilers. A shorter version is available at the related question, and a related link to a video walkthrough will be added when it becomes available.

Arriving on the Island - the PDC at work

1) There are three sections to the exterior of the island:

Knaves Landing Condos / Globochem, Bus Stop - Main Street / Business District

2) People comment that a lot of strange new people are appearing in the community, and a conspiracy theorist is broadcasting on a pirate radio station. (These are undercover operations by the agency PDC, or Poptropica Disease Control.)

3) Go far right to the Waist Not fitness center. You can work out, but what you need is one of the blue tension bands from the stretching machine. Pull it until it breaks.

4) Leave and go left back to the Bus Stop. There is nothing to do in the video store or the Falafel stand.

5) Climb the bus stop cover, jump up to the nest, and USE the resistance band to grab the hook. You can climb up to the roof and talk to the Bert Shell, the conspiracy theorist. He tells you about a suspicious van near the Condos.

6) Go left, jump the wall, and talk to the van driver. He quickly escapes, leaving behind a bag of shredded documents. Take them back to Bert on the roof. (You should click "use" but the process begins without it.)

7) Assemble the strips into 3 documents: a blueprint of a secret PDC lab, a script to use for covert operations, and a Pizza Delivery Company (PDC) card. Sometimes only the blue PDC card is enough. Bert gives you a fake ID card to help you investigate.

8) Go right to the Video Store. The clerk takes you to a secret elevator in the back room. You will meet Dr. Lange, who explains the threat of the new virus. She recruits you to find and photograph the person they believe has been exposed to the deadly virus. (You must get a camera here!)

9) Go far left to the Knaves Landing Condos. Enter and go through the discarded mail. You find a postcard and letter for Joe Stockman in apartment 3. But he is not there.

10) Go right and into the Globochem building where Joe works. But you cannot get into the offices without a badge. Fortunately, you have another way to slip inside.

11) Go far right to the Falafel store. The owner is taking a lunch order to Globochem. Follow him back there and go in behind him.

12) On the top floor you find Joe. Pretend to mistake him for a celebrity and get a photo. Take it back to the video store/secret lab. Dr. Lange will show you their plan.

Nano-training and Your Mission inside Joe Stockman

13) The PDC will use a shrinking machine to make you small enough to enter Joe's body in a special miniature craft that can perform all the functions you will need. The micro-ship is called the Panacea X9700 and has 2 important features and 4 main tool attachments:

- Shield against damage from biological and viral attacks

- Gravity core to counteract the flow of fluids or air

- Laser scalpel to cut tissue and for attacking microbes

- ElectroBolt tool to stimulate nerves

- Coagulant shooter (green blobs) to stop internal bleeding

- A double-barreled gun to shoot attacking viruses

Use the tools to complete the tutorial. Select a tool by clicking the ship then the tool (you will want to click the ship edge or it may just turn instead). Press the spacebar to fire the electro-bolt, or coagulant, or gun. If your shield is damaged, you can use the scalpel or gun to break floating red blood cells to recharge it (blue dots). If your ship is destroyed, a new one will be regenerated and you restart that scene.

14) That evening, they trick Joe with some Chinese food, which contains you and the Panacea. You are swallowed and enter the stomach, where you can shoot stray viruses and use the coagulator to close an ulcer.

15) Unfortunately, Joe gets a splinter in his finger. When you travel to the hand to investigate, antibodies strip away all the features of your ship (except the gun, another flaw, as it appears again when you reach the stomach). They take them to various parts of Joe's body: the mouth, intestines, heart, arm, and brain.

16) Exit the hand (upper left) back to the stomach. Go up and left, out of the stomach, which is filling with grape soda. Go up the esophagus when it opens.

17) In the throat, leave the ship and ride some gas bubbles up to the mouth. Click the image that is floating near Joe's gold tooth. You have recovered the shield. Return to the ship and reenter the stomach.

18) Dive down and left through the liquid to reach the pylorus (exit from the stomach) which leads you to the intestines. Go through when it opens.

19) Travel through the intestines. Avoid the drips of digestive juices as you use the gun to shoot away clumps of undigested food. You will meet a virus attack at the end.

20) As the virus shoves its hooked tentacle out to hit you, Dodge it and shoot the hook with your gun. Continue until it is destroyed. You have recovered the laser scalpel.

21) Leave the intestines and travel to the heart.

22) The virus is in the heart valves, and attacks you with its hooks. Avoid them and fly between them to stab the virus with the laser scalpel. You will have to stab then pull back to avoid the hooks. As you defeat it, it moves to another location. At the fourth spot, it is destroyed by antibodies. You have recovered the coagulant.

23) Go back out the way you entered (you cannot go forward to the lungs yet). Leave the heart and go to the arm (Joe is at the fitness center working out.)

24) Use the coagulant to seal any tears as you move between the muscles. Avoid the spiked ridges. You cannot pass a bleeding tear until you have healed it.

25) In the second section of the arm, you face another virus challenge: there are two eruptions that release pairs of somewhat tougher virus attackers. One is at lower left and the other at upper middle. You can kill both the attackers and the two erupted colonies with your gun, but they are durable and you have a limited amount of time, because Joe is bleeding from three cuts at the far right.

The secret: to distract the attackers, use the coagulant to close the three tears, especially the one at far right. The attackers will be drawn to those to reopen them, and you can further delay this by shooting them as they head there. Destroy the lower left eruption, then repeat the process for the upper middle. Then kill the attackers and coagulate the three tears. You have recovered the electrobolt. Use it on the nerves to relieve Joe's cramp.

26) Exit left, leave the arm and go to the brain. Here you will need the electrobolt to enter, and also to connect neurons: after pressing the spacebar to electrify the round end of a neuron, you can drag it on its long stem to the larger "head" end of any other neuron that is close enough. This is the only way to defeat the boss virus in the brain. Shooting him does not work.

27) You have to switch between the electrobolt and the gun. Use the gun to shoot the attacking viruses launched by the larger boss in groups of four. Switch to the electrobolt to join neurons together. You create a chain from the "sparking" active neuron at far left, through a series of neurons, to reach the nerve that the boss virus is attached to. (You will do this 5 times. as he moves to a new spot.) Shoot the four or more attackers, then quickly switch, use the spacebar to grab or disconnect a round end, and bring it to another neuron. When the boss is killed the fifth time, you win. The antibodies attack and you recover the gravity core. You can now go to the lungs by way of the heart.

28) Leave the brain and travel to the heart. Travel all the way through and exit at upper right. You will enter the lungs, where there is one more very easy boss virus to beat. Travel from the right lung to the left, where a huge four-armed virus is attacking the alveoli (the groups of "easter eggs" clustered on the walls). It extends each of the tubular arms to hook the clusters, but you can shoot the arms and it does not attack you. It takes between 10 and 20 hits for each one, and the boss then moves from lung to lung. There are a few straggler attack viruses, but they seldom arrive in time. When you complete the fourth arm, the boss is destroyed. Joe sneezes, propelling you out of his mouth and out of the ship.

29) Dr. Lange and her assistant arrive to get a blood sample, so that a vaccine can be made from it. You receive the Island Medallion.

BONUS QUEST - Paid Members Only

You have to destroy the "weaponized heartworm" that was inadvertently left out to be eaten by the dog, Belle.

1) Get the petri dish that the dog's owner found.

2) Go to the lab (video store) where you show Dr. Lange the Petri Dish from the trash. He will tell you to contain the heartworm using the Panacea micro-ship.

3) Get some Falafel from the stand and take it to where the dog is sitting, so that you can get inside with the ship.

4) The heartworms can only be destroyed by shooting their exposed green whip-like tails. In the dog's mouth, you can also use the coagulator on the open cuts.

5) Shoot the two tails covering the esophagus (right) and trachea (lower left). Head into the esophagus to enter the digestive system.

6) Use the laser to cut through obstructions, and shoot the doggie treats to break them loose. Destroy all the green tails and exit at the lower left to the intestines.

7) In the intestines, use the electrobolt on the nerves to open the muscles and pass through. (You may have to double back to reach some of them.) When you reach the end, double back to the mouth to reach the lungs and heart. Enter the trachea at lower left.

8) In the lung, shoot the tails as they extend and avoid getting hit when they pop back out. New ones can come out of the same holes. When all are gone, enter the small slit at right (the pulmonary vein).

9) In the heart, you will face the boss heartworm. Each of its four segments will sprout two green tails that you have to shoot until they are destroyed.

10) Exit the mouth. The dog is cured and you receive the Flying Ace costume award.

FEATURES left out of quest: there are 6 health problems that you can address for Joe in addition to the ulcer in his stomach. Although they are noted in the system advisories, apparently they do not have to be corrected. They are :

- bleeding in finger

- "cavity" in a tooth

- bleeding tear in brain

- penny in intestines

- heart arrhythmia

- calcification in arm joint

You can travel back to fix them in some cases using the tools, but before going to the lungs (where the game ends).

MAJOR GLITCHES at release time:

* excessive load times between scenes

* browser incompatibility issues (including failure to load on Firefox)

* right side of larger screen includes "dead space"

* costumizer not working, item bag requires two steps to open

* you may not receive a camera -- must restart island!

* you can enter the lungs before you have the gravity core -- you cannot navigate, there is nothing to do, and you must exit where you came in (lower right area of the lung).

* Bonus Quest does not have arrows indicating where pathways are: you just have to figure out where to aim the ship.
