First of all if you want to actually control him put your controller in the 3rd port, second of all you know the area where names can be put into aka the name entry in the character select screen well here's what you need to do: Hold B and then press A on the name spot quickly before the game goes back to the main menu press A on NAME ENTRY if you pressed fast enough and kept holding B Masterhand will become your character. THIS TRICK WILL NOT WORK IF A PLAYER IS SELECTED.
