Marathon.
Addition:
Marathon was the Athenian victory in the First Persian War. In the Second Persian War, the Athenian fleet defeated the Persian Navy at Salamis, and destroyed what remained of it at Mycale.
Comment:
Athens did not defeat the Persian navy at Salamis. The victory at Salamis was achieved by a coalition of 21 Greek city-states which was led by Sparta and included a major Athenian component.
Athens could claim the victory at Marathon as it commanded the 10,000 soldiers and provided 9,000 of them (Plataia provided 1,000).
The Athenians did not win the Persian Wars. The southern mainland Greek city-states in alliance defeated the Persian invasion of 480-479 BCE in three battles - Salamis 480 BCE, Plataia and Mykale 479 BCE.
The Delian League then defeated the Persians at Eurymedon 466 BCE and Cyprus 450 BCE.
They achieved these victories by good stratedy and tactics, fighting the Persians on ground/sea locations which optimised their superiority in naval tactics and their advantage of armoured infantry by fighting on ground which neutralised the superior Persian cavalry.
Sparta and Athens were allies against Persia in the Persian War.
Yes.
Unknown.
No. An alliance of Greek city-states defeated Persian forces in a series of battles over fifty years 499-449 BCE, led early on by Sparta and later by Athens.
Which Persian War? 1980, 1991, 2003, or...?
Their armoured infantry were superior to the Persian infantry but were wary of the Persian cavalry on open ground on the plain of Marathon. The Athenians with their ally Plataia lurked in the hills waiting for the Spartans to arrive, but when they saw the Persian cavalry being embarked on the Persian fleet, they took the opportunity to run down and defeat the unprotected Persian infantry.
