The PlayStation 2 software does not support un-routered connections to a computer. If you have the newer 'Slim line' PlayStation 2s then you just hook an 1 end of the Ethernet cable into the Ps2 and the other end into an Ethernet wall jack/router.
If you have the older 'Fat' PlayStation 2s then you need to buy a network adapter which hooks into the back of the PlayStation. Then you hook an 1 end of the Ethernet cable into the Ps2 and the other end into an Ethernet wall jack/router.
Yes that is why the PS3 has a plug slot. The only way a PS3 can be connected to the internet is WiFi or ethernet cable
