When combined with enough stuff, they make a godsword. Godshards are pieces of godsword's blade, if you have enough smithing lvl ( i think its 91) then you can attached 3 piece of godshard to the hilt making a godsword.

It will be dismantled into smaller pieces. Those pieces can be fit together again to make the godsword. I believe the individual pieces can't be used separately, but they can be bought and sold on the market.
