Much like any other type of doctor, a person must go through many years of school before he or she can earn a veterinary degree. Many people go into this field because they love animals, although there is a slight notion that some people choose to become animal doctors because they could not handle a real medical school. The notion is silly because a person who earns a veterinary degree may not have to go through a long internship period, but he or she must learn anatomy for different types of animals.

When applying to a four year college, a person who wants to earn a veterinary degree cannot just fill it out on his major. The student must go through a series of courses designed to prepare the student for the knowledge that he or she will need to apply to veterinary school. As with med school, this is where a person learns the diseases and conditions that he or she will come across when he or she starts working for a private practice.

When he completes his pre-veterinary studies, he must apply to a school that teaches veterinary medicine. This is an additional four year program and the competition to get into these schools is high. Only about one out of every three applicants gets accepted. This due to the number of schools staying roughly the same, and an increased interest of people who want to go into the field.

After he earns his veterinary degree, he must complete a one-year internship. Her he will have the ability to practice what he learned on a hands-on basis and decide if being doctor of veterinary medicine is right for him. After a student completes his internship, he can choose to specialize on a certain type of medicine.

Even if a student obtains his veterinary medicine degree and successfully completes his internship, there is one more thing he must do before he can practice medicine. As with most medical professionals from the certified nursing assistant level an up, a new veterinary doctor must obtain a license from his states licensing board. Depending on which state he lives in, a state may exempt this requirement for veterinarians working in state or local government.
