A veterinarian is a broadly trained medical scientist who has focused on understanding the diseases of, and treatment for, animals. A veterinarian who works in public health is one who is focusing on the human/animal interface to prevent human disease by controlling animal disease. Examples of this include: inspecting meat and poultry products to ensure they are safe and from disease-free animals, planning the oral rabies vaccination program for an area to control or prevent the introduction of rabies into the area, investigating a novel disease outbreak to find the source (which anymore is usually a disease from a local animal population) and working to eradicate animal diseases around the world.
