Did Abraham Lincoln love riding horses?

Yes, he did. He loved all animals, and when he moved into the White House, a couple of Nanny goats were acquired to keep the Lincoln Family's horses, company. President Lincoln's horse was "Old Bob", and the President rode him personally, or drove his own coach with "Old Bob" as the coach's horse. ( rather than hiring a Coachman). On February 10, 1864, the White House Stables caught fire, and burned to the ground. Unfortunately, Willie's former Pony, Tad's Pony, 2 horses belonging to the President, 2 horses belonging to the President's Private Secretary, John Nicolay, and the all the goats perished in the fire. When the President saw the fire, he rushed through a crowd, which had gathered, and began to break open one of the large doors with his own hands; but the building was full of fire, and none of the horses could be saved. The President had to be restrained by soldiers from rushing into the inferno. The officer in charge of the security detail he led Mr. Lincoln back to the White House. Later, the President was seen weeping at an East Room window.

Why would the north want to capture atlanta?

It did not want to, according to Grant's strategy, which was simply to destroy the two armies under Johnston and Lee. But when this still hadn't happened, month after month, and Lincoln's credibility was about to be tested in the 1864 Election, the capture of Atlanta was seen as the kind of victory that would reassure the Northern public. It did just that, and Lincoln crucially won his second term.

Did the Emancipation Proclamation started the US Civil War?

No, it was Lincoln's somewhat desperate tactic for keeping Britain and France from sending aid to the Confederates. The Proclamation turned the war into an official crusade against slavery, so any foreign powers that supported the Confederates would then be seen as pro-slavery themselves.

Abraham Lincoln earliest influences were his parents. They needed his help on the farm, and as such, his time in school was very minimum. Thus, his parents encouraged him to be an avid reader. After his mother died and his father remarried, Lincoln came to admire and respect his step mother. His education was sporadic as a kid. He studied under Zachariah Riney, Caleb Hazel, Andrew Crawford (who loaned him Life of Washington) and James Swaney. When he was getting into politics, Henry Clay was his mentor and dear friend. He met and became friends with Cyrus Edward when he served in the military. Edward later became an Illinois State Senator.
