The canal was built between Georgetown (currently in Washington, D.C.) and Cumberland, Maryland in order to quickly transport goods from the Ohio valley. The Great Falls of the Potomac prohibit ships from traveling any further upstream from Washington and therefore a canal was necessary to continue the transportation of goods by water.
