No states in the US practice slavery. Some states USED TO but not anymore.
Some of the southern states in the US include Texas, Delaware, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Alabama, Kentucky, Arkansas, Oklahoma, and Florida.
The secession of the various Southern states (following South Carolina's lead) was triggered by Lincoln's rejection of the final compromise, because it would have allowed some extension of slavery. The actual combat was triggered by the firing of Confederate artillery at the Union garrison on the island of Fort Sumter in Charleston Harbour.

Lincoln's rejection of the Crittenden compromise, because it would have allowed some extension of slavery.
Some Southern States in the United States (pre-civil war era) wanted to start a new country because the North wouldn't allow slavery and was pushing the anti-slavery concept on the South. So, if the Southern states became a new country, the North couldn't tell them what to do. Of course, they never did actually start a new country because the secession of some states was unreasonable and not justified (according to the North).
The election of Abraham Lincoln who promised not to disturb slavery in the states where it existed lead the southern states to secede because of his affiliation with the north. The southern states did not trust Lincoln viewing him as antislavery and too close to northern interest.
The alternative was to let the south secede from the Union or achieve some kind of compromise.
Buchanan offered the opinion that secession was illegal, but that going to war to stop secession would also be illegal. Therefore his administration did not do anything except try to broker some peace talks that were not effective. He is not called the "Do Nothing President" for no reason.

True; President Abraham Lincoln told the Southern states that the sanctity of the United States was of paramount importance and he would use military force to keep them from succession. During the Civil War, there were four slave states that remained in the Union: Delaware, Maryland, Kentucky, and Missouri. These states did not secede from the Union to join the Confederacy, despite allowing slavery within their borders. Their decision to stay in the Union was influenced by a variety of factors, including economic interests, political alignments, and strategic considerations.
