Many came to escape religious persecution from the church. Some were criminals sent over from prisons as their punishment. Others came as indentured servants to gain their own land. So it was mainly for freedom from the church and the crown.

The first people to settle the land were the native people that lived in america.

Many came as a way to escape religious persecution. At the time, England was conforming to Puritanism and were persecuting most/all Catholics, Jews, Protestants. Catholocism was the previous religion of England, so many English were already established in the religion.
