Drake landed in San Francisco Bay but I wouldn't call it claiming the area. He did leave a plank of wood stating he was there with an English coin attached. It wasn't until modern times that the plank was found on the beach by someone. The Spanish did claim the land, build missions, and start settlements along the coast. The Spanish influence is still seen today.
