Answer:Harvard University but regarding the oldest engineering schools in the nation:

Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) -- "The oldest technological university in the English-speaking world". Founded primarily as an engineering school in 1824, RPI has been granting official engineering degrees ever since. Rensselaer's original engineering programs have been "ABET accredited" continually, since ABET was formed in 1936. Harvard has only one ABET accredited engineering program and it was wasn't officially accepted by ABET until 1962. West Point's engineering degrees, although old, were NOT officially accepted or accredited by ABET until 1985.

This answer is disputable. The College of William and Mary (which is now public) was the first of today's public universities to receive its charter (1693). However, it was private and did not become public until after the Civil War. The University of Georgia was chartered prior to the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, but did not start admitting students until after UNC-CH. in the 1790s. Thus, it depends on how you interpret "oldest."

The oldest university west of the Mississippi River is Saint Louis University, which was founded on November 16, 1818 by Reverend Louis Guillaume Valentin Dubourg. (Originally is was called the Saint Louis Academy) The university is privately owned.

Of course, Saint Louis is right next to the river, and often times is not really considered to be "West of the Mississippi River" in terms of the Western United States. Several other universities were also created soon after, but all long towns near the Mississippi River, so the oldest university west of both Saint Louis and the Mississippi River is the University of Utah, established on February 28, 1850. (Originally called the University of Deseret) It is the oldest public university west of the Mississippi river.

The oldest university west of the Mississippi River is Saint Louis University (SLU), which was founded on November 16, 1818 by Reverend Louis Guillaume Valentin Dubourg. (Originally is was called the Saint Louis Academy) The university is a private, co-educational Jesuit Catholic university located in St. Louis, Missouri. The university was later taken over by the Society of Jesus making it the second oldest Jesuit college in the nation.

Of course, Saint Louis is right next to the river, and often times is not really considered to be "West of the Mississippi River" in terms of the Western United States. Several other universities were also created soon after, but all long towns near the Mississippi River, so the oldest university west of both Saint Louis and the Mississippi River is Willamette University in Salem Oregon, founded in 1842.
