So popular, that a Vice President (Aaron Burr) actually killed a Secretary of the Treasury (Alexander Hamilton) in a duel. By 1859, dueling was beginning to be viewed a lot less favorably and 18 states had actually outlawed it. By the early twentieth century, anti-dueling laws were enforced and the practice came to an end.
