The main affect of the anti-slavery abolitionists was to bring the nation to an acute understanding of why slavery was immoral and needed to be abolished. This was necessary as far as they were concerned as although few people in the Northern States were in favor of slavery, many were not in a radical mode for its abolishment.

More likely they shared President Lincoln's view which was to allow slavery where it currently existed, but not to let slavery expand to new States or territories.
