That's off by about 65 years. Mercury dimes were minted from 1916 to 1945. A dime from 1853 would be called a Liberty dime or Liberty Seated dime.

The Liberty Seated Dime (1837-1891)
Check that coin again. The Barber dime was introduced in 1892. In 1881, the design in use was the Seated Liberty.
A circulated Seated Liberty dime without an "S" mintmark dated 1889 has retail values of $10.00-$80.00 depending on the condition of the coin.
The Liberty Seated Dime was minted from 1837 to 1891 by the US Mint. There may be two very small holes in the coin that may effect the value of it.
1837 is the last year for the Capped Bust dime and the first year for Liberty Seated dimes plus there are 2 varieties of the 1837 Liberty Seated dime. So 3 different dimes are possible for this date. Please post new question with a description of the coin.
