This design is normally called a Barber half, after its designer Charles Barber.

Look under the eagle to see if there's a mint mark letter. Numismedia lists the following approximate retail values as of 05/2011:

No mint mark (Philadelphia):

Very worn condition - $17

Moderately worn - $41

Slightly worn - $102

Almost no wear - $362

Uncirculated - $528 to $21,450 depending on quality

"O" mint mark (New Orleans):

Very worn condition - $34

Moderately worn - $228

Slightly worn - $342

Almost no wear - $716

Uncirculated - $1,230 to $34,450

"S" mint mark (San Francisco):

Very worn condition - $26

Moderately worn - $88

Slightly worn - $162

Almost no wear - $534

Uncirculated - $920 to $16,900

Two things must first be determined... First, does the coin have a mint mark? It would be located on the reverse of the coin below the eagle's tail feathers. Second, the grade (condition) of the coin must be determined. Below is a list of values for the 1898 Barber Half Dollar from the three mints at different grades:

1898 Barber Half (Philadelphia - No Mint Mark): G4 - $12.50; VG8 - $15; F12 - $38.50; VF20 - $96.00; XF40 - $160.00; AU50 - $325; MS60 - $485.00; MS63 - $950.00; MS65 - $4,000.00

1898 "O" Barber Half (New Orleans): G4 - $36.00; VG8 - $75; F12 - $225.00; VF20 - $355.00; XF40 - $500.00; AU50 - $625.00; MS60 - $1,250.00; MS63 - $3,300.00; MS65 - $12,000.00

1898 "S" Barber Half (San Francisco): G4 - $27.50; VG8 - $50; F12 - $85.00; VF20 - $165.00; XF40 - $300.00; AU50 - $425; MS60 - $970.00; MS63 - $3,750.00; MS65 - $10,500.00

Most Barber Halves that have been in circulation will fall somewhere in the G - VG grade. For grading assistance you can query Google (www.google.com) on the internet for "grading coins" and choose a website. Whichever site you choose, make sure they use the grading standards as outlined by the A.N.A. (American Numismatic Association). Marc
