1895 is a key date for Morgan dollars. Coins for circulationwere made at New Orleans and San Francisco. Look for an O or S above the DO in DOLLAR (The M on the front of the coin is the designer's monogram and not a mint mark.)

If your coin doesn't have a mint mark there's more information below.

Numismedia lists the following approximate retail values as of 05/2012:

"O" (New Orleans):

Very worn - $219

Moderately worn - $312

Slightly worn - $394

Almost no wear - $1,807

Uncirculated - $16,880 to $662,500

"S" (San Francisco):

Very worn - $282

Moderately worn - $504

Slightly worn - $690

Almost no wear - $2,018

Uncirculated - $3,590 to $101,880

No mint mark (Philadelphia):

Philadelphia only struck special proof dollars that year. These don't have a mint mark and are highly valuable -

Very worn - $16,380

Moderately worn - $25,800

Slightly worn - $30,600

Almost no wear - $36,600

Uncirculated - $39,900 to $562,500 depending on quality

However there are many fakes, replicas, and altered coins on the market so it's critical to have any supposed 1895 dollar examined and verified by one of the major grading services.

DISCLAIMER: The retail values quoted are the best available as of the date shown, but may vary significantly due to changes in the precious metals market. Also the wholesale (buying) price of a coin will be less than the selling (retail) price. A reputable coin dealer will be able to give a more accurate valuation based on inspection of the coin.

FAQ's about Morgan dollarsE Pluribus Unum

The motto E Pluribus Unum (Latin for "Out of Many, One") is on ALL $1 coins minted since 1878 so that's not specific enough to ID any one coin.

Silver Eagles

Silver eagles are bullion coins minted since 1986 for sale to collectors but not for spending. Morgan dollars were made for use in ordinary circulation just like dimes and quarters.

A 1895 Morgan Dollar in very fine condition is worth: $33,000.

A 1895-O in the same condition is worth: $ 600.00

A 1895-S in very fine condition is worth: $450.00

Make sure you have this coin appraised and look for any mint mark (ie, O or S).
