1933 and earlier gold coins are 90% precious metal. In average condition their minimum retail value is determined by the current price of gold. A metal dealer will pay less; a coin dealer or collector may pay much more depending on the coin's rarity.

Look on the back of the coin to see if there's a small mint mark letter below the eagle. It may be blank or there may be a C, D or S.

Numismedia lists the following approximate retail values as of 07/2012:

No mint mark (Philadelphia):

Very worn condition - $504

Moderately worn - $550

Slightly worn - $575

Almost no wear - $696

Uncirculated - $1,910 to $71,500 depending on quality

"C" mint mark (Charlotte):

Slightly worn - $2,410

Almost no wear - $11,576

Uncirculated - $28,130 to $77,740

"D" mint mark (Dahlonega, GA):

Moderately worn - $4,380

Slightly worn - $8,440

Almost no wear - $32,566

Uncirculated - $65,630 to $208,000

"S" mint mark (San Francisco):

Moderately worn - $660

Slightly worn - $1,090

Almost no wear - $10,614

Uncirculated - $37,500 to $43,130

DISCLAIMER: The retail values quoted are the best available as of the date shown, but may vary significantly due to changes in the precious metals market. Also the wholesale (buying) price of a coin will be less than the selling (retail) price. A reputable coin dealer will be able to give a more accurate valuation based on inspection of the coin.
