For an accurate assessment of value the coin needs to be seen and graded. As with most early U.S. coins different varieties of the same date exist. Assuming the coin is circulated, retail values for the most common type (Small Date) are $75.00 in G-4 to $300.00 for a F-12 example. Higher grade coins are worth more. Values are a market average and only for coins in collectible condition, coins that are bent, corroded, scratched, used as jewelry or have been cleaned have far less value if any to a collector or dealer.

The last Liberty head (a/k/a/ "Large") cents were made in 1857. All cents dated 1888 are Indian Head cents. Please see the Related Question for more information.
