August 5, 2009 The 1944 Walking Liberty half dollar was produced at 3 US Mints: Philadelphia which is shown in this list as 1944-P, Denver which is shown in this list as 1944-D, San Francisco which is shown as 1944-S. To determine which coin you have it is necessary to locate the mint mark. This mark consists of a small letter located on the reverse [tails] side of the coin in the little 'valley' to the left of the letter "H" in the word "HALF". The letter "D" is for Denver. The letter "S" is for San Francisco. If there is no letter, the coin was minted at Philadephia. The circulated and uncirculated values of these coins are shown in the following list. The gold is plating that was added later by a private company. It destroys any collector value the coin had, but as of 01/2010 it's still worth about $7-8 for its silver content.
