Toni Morrison is an American author who has won a Pulitzer Prize and the Nobel Prize. She was a professor at Princeton from 1989 to 2008. She was born in 1931.
ExpositionThe story introduces the narrator Squeaky as a young black girl with attitude. As she walks down the street in Harlem with her mentally challenged brother Raymond, the reader learns that Squeaky's main responsibility is to take care of the brother. She guards him continually from going into the street and jumping into the gutters. While she walks, Squeaky prepares for the May Day Race that she has won for several years. In the neighborhood, she is known as "the fastest thing on two feet."Rising ActionThe narrator and her brother come upon her rival Gretchen and Squeaky's former friends. Gretchen, new to the neighborhood, potentially could beat Squeaky. One of the ex-friends begins to tease Raymond; sharp-witted Hazel quickly retaliates and avoids a confrontation with the girls.ClimaxRacing envelops Squeaky. The race begins, and the race is over before she knows it. Her body took her past the finish line. Gretchen ran hard as well. Neither girl is sure who won the race. The announcer comes over the speaker and says that Hazel Parker won, with Gretchen coming in second.Falling actionRaymond gets Squeaky attention by rattling on the fence like a gorilla in a cage who wants out. She observes him and wonders how good a runner that Raymond would be since he is able to keep up with her when she races. She can always retire from running and coach Raymond.ResolutionGretchen and Hazel see each other after the race. This time they exchange real smiles. Typically, Squeaky ends with the idea that maybe instead of practicing being flowers at the May Pole, they should do something like learn how to be respectful people
Toni L. Russell, the daughter of Leon C. and Lela (Ervin) Russell, born December 15, 1968, Corsicana Texas, first inquired to used the term "First Lady" in regards to her Pastor's Wife, Berdie Johnson who was married to the church's pastor, Elder A.Z. Johnson. The church was called Johnson Memorial Church of God in Christ. Toni, a sixth grader, had had her fill of the term "pastor's wife", as it did not justify her vision of the true manner that embodied her Pastor's Wife. Toni inquired the services of the church missionary, Ima Lois Lampkin, a high school math teacher, to petition the Church of God in Christ (C.O.G.I.C.) Headquarters to ask permission. She was thrilled to hear the term used in the Pastor and Wife Anniversary a few months later. After being approved, Sister Rosie Williams, a member of the church, called Sister Berdie the first lady, as she was speaking on the wife of the pastor at the Pastor's Anniversary. Sister Williams looked at the child when she first used it, as it had never been used ever before in that capacity. The child silently acknowledge that headquarters had given permission and after the service spoke with her mother that it had been approved.Today churches all over America now use the term without knowing that it originated from the mind of a small girl, who simply desired to call her Pastor's Wife, the only name at her disposal that reflected her Pastor's Wife spirit. Annie Turnbo Malone obtained the first patent in 1900, but Madam CJ Walker (Sarah Breedlove) made improvements on the comb by widening the teeth for better result in straightening and prevention of tearing and breaking the hair. In later years after improvements, Walter Sammons obtained a patent on the pressing comb in 1920. By this time Madam CJ Walker (1867-1919) was dead. Walter Sammons did not invent the pressing comb. The pressing comb was actually invented and produce in France in the mid 1800s. Thank you, Toni Breedlove
