Hunt and fish or plant a garden. Things that were fun but also could give them something to eat. Also dancing , horseback riding and sailing, Children's games: Hopscotch, Ring Around the Rosy and House. And then of course there are card games for all ages and levels, plus Board Games like checkers and Chess. For the boys, marksmanship and riding horses. Girls were allowed to ride, but probably boys had priority.

The colonists would combined work with pleasure whenever they could. An example would be when a newcomer arrived, the community would help to build a barn or house. Such an opportunity allowed men and boys to stage foot races, or shooting or Wrestling contest. They would also compete in plowing or corn husking.

The women and girls held quilting bees, and everyone enjoyed spelling bees and singing. All such activities gave everyone the chance to share good things to eat and drink, and to exchange news and gossip. Weddings and holidays were important occasions for feasting and amusement as well.

Horse racing became popular in most all of the colonies during the late 1600's. Colonial taverns, sometimes called an ordinary, was where the men would meet to drink, eat, talk, smoke, and play cards. Cockfighting was also popular in the Southern Colonies. Everywhere, fishing and hunting were favorite sports, and allowed households to be well supplied with food.

Colonial children played many of the games that the children of today play. Some examples would be hopscotch, leapfrog, London Bridge, hide and seek, and blindman's bluff. Colonial toys included marbles, dolls, kites, balls, tops, and jump ropes. However, children from rich families would have special toys such as tea sets or toy soldiers that would be imported from England.
