The Lakota Sioux settled in western South Dakota in 1776. The Yankton Sioux settled in the south east part of South Dakota. In 1817, Fort Pierre was built. The Yankton Sioux signed a treaty giving up their land in 1858. South Dakota became a state in 1889. The Wounded Knee Massacre happened in 1890.

South Dakota became a US state on November 2, 1889. South Dakota was part of the Louisiana Purchase in 1803 and was eventually part of the Dakota Territory. The Lewis and Clark expedition traveled through South Dakota in 1804. The Custer Expedition discovered gold in the Black Hills in 1874 and war broke out when the US government failed to stop white miners and settlers from entering the region which had been granted to the Sioux by the Treaty of Laramie in 1868.

The gold rush in the Black Hills in the mid-1800's and the railroads brought European-American settlers to South Dakota. South Dakota was part of the Dakota Territory from March 2, 1861, until November 2, 1889, when it was admitted to the union as the state of South Dakota.
The title of "Elk Capitol of South Dakota" is claimed by Pringle, South Dakota because of its historical reputation for hunting wild game -- sometimes illegally. The Pringle Poacher's Association used to host an annual celebration in Pringle and they still drive the "Pringle Poachers" car in area parades and events.
