* The leader and govenor of the colony was JohnWhite

* There were over 100 colonists

* When John White left to get more supplies he was only supposed to be gone for 6 months, but instead was absent for 3 years.

* He was gone so long because England was at war with Spain and no one wanted to send supplies to a small settlement when food was needed for the soldiers fighting

* When he came back to the colony he found it deserted, the only thing left was a fence.

* He had found the word CROATOAN carved into a post and the letters CRO carved into a tree.

* He was going to search another island for them but a storm prevented him from doing so.

* The first colonist to be born on American soil was Virginia Dare

* A theory is that the Indians killed them, another is that the colonists simply went to live with the Indians. Some Indians have said they have white ancestors and some of their last names are much like or exactly the same as those of the colonists.

* There was also a very long drought while John White was gone and he did find very few bodies, supporting this idea

* The last theory was that disease killed them.

* The lost colony or Roanoke was the 3rd attempt to settle on American soil, but it of course failed

* Amny years later some explorers found a coin in the settlement of an Indian tribe. The coin was said to belong to a family in the colony
