Yes, very important. The symbolism of Moses and the Exodus was used by the Pilgrims when they crossed the ocean to settle America. The founding fathers, such as Washington, Jefferson, and later Lincoln, all used the words and ideas that Moses wrote to help them guide American politics. Lincoln, for ending black slavery, was called a "Moses of the people."
The first seal of the U.S. had a drawing of Moses crossing the Red Sea, to represent our own Pilgrims who also escaped religious oppression in Europe. Martin Luther King constantly used the symbol of Moses in his sermons: "I've seen the Promised Land . . . we as a people will get to the Promised Land."

------------------------ Moses is important in Jewish belief because The Bible says that he led the Israelites out of captivity in Egypt, and that he gave the people the Ten Commandments. Moses would only be important in Israelite history if indeed the Exodus from Egypt really occurred. However, over 90 per cent of scholars are reported to say that the biblical Exodus from Egypt never really occurred. On this view, Moses probably never existed and certainly did not have an important place in Israelite history.
