Italian-born Giovanni da Verrazano was the first to explore the region between Florida and Newfoundland for a route to the Pacific Ocean. He later claimed Florida for France, making him the founder of the first "permanent" French colony in North America. Because there are no French colonies left in America today, none of them were completely permanent.
