The area that is today the state of Minnesota was acquired by the United States in two separate events.
First, the U.S. acquired the portion of Minnesota that is east of the Mississippi River as part of the Northwest Territory, a region that England and its American colonists won from France in the French and Indian War (1754-1763).
Later, the U.S. acquired the portion of Minnesota that is west of the Mississippi River in the Louisiana Purchase of 1803.
