The Spanish actually treated the Native Americans badly. They enslaved them and then took mostly all their tools. The Spanish conquistadors were interested in sending the gold & silver that the Aztecs and Inca Native Americans had acquired. They made war on the tribes they encountered. The Spanish explorers/conquistadors made extensive missions into the South West of the Northern Hemisphere. They came to the western coast of what is now California. They also moved south from Mexico and overwhelmed the Incas in South America. The Spanish found out that the Native Americans made poor slaves. They ended up killing many of the native tribes they encountered. Let me add that the largest prize in South America was Brazil. In this area the Portuguese dominated the native tribes they encountered.
No one is making excuses for the actions of the Spaniards, and it is all to easy to look back with hindsight 20-20 vision & view their actions based on current morals. This was a new game of sorts to Spain, and what may have passed as "ok" in the 16th century was no less cruel than the actions of countries in Europe when they were at war with each other.
I have returned to this answer as I consider it to be a major edit and have left the "Mark this as a minor edit " blank.
The Spanish conquest affected the Native Americans in a devastating way. Due to the violence of the wars fought against the Spanish, Spanish abuse of their subjects during their rule of American lands, and the western diseases transmitted by Spanish soldiers. merchants, and settlers, the Natives suffered huge population losses. At the same time, their general culture was dismantled, with mere pieces being carried forward in the creation of a new Spanish-American civilization.
In the Southwestern area of North America they enslaved the Native Americans they found and made them work gold and silver mines. Missions were built to convert the Native Americans and to establish a Spanish foothold in the area. Disease, mistreatment, and abuse killed many that came into contact. One major change was the Spanish introduced the horse to North America and this changed the lifestyle of the Native Americans.
