Lincoln had won by about 40% of the vote. The only people who voted for him were in the North, and not everyone in the north voted for him. The south did not vote for Lincoln, in fact he wasnt even on some of the ballots in southern states/cities. When he won the south realized how inferior they were to the north.

Why did Nixon bother with wanting to break into the Democratic HQ's when clearly seen through the results of the 1972 election that the country was in favor of him?

The break-ins occurred some five months before the election and apparently the outcome was still in doubt. Nixon was not himself involved with the break ins. I don't think he approved them or knew about them in advance. He got into trouble afterward when an attempt was made to cover them up.
