It affected many people because its outstanding literary devices, especially symbolism. Hawthornes story was also very popular at the time because he included some supernatural things, such as making characters appear to float. The book is very influential because it helps people realize how different things were back in the 1700's. For example now a days no one would have to wear a "scarlet letter" or be shunned because they committed adultery. This story shows the reader how much times have changed. Also it was influential because it was a story about forbidden love, which draws attention to many people. Now most schools also teach "The Scarlet Letter" to there students so they can learn about the old writing styles and because many people argue that the book contains the best used literary devices.
