The slaves would travel at night, so as not to be seen, and during the day there were houses or barns or buissness owned by abolitionists where the could stay and hide until nightfall
There were types of slaves and this told what job they did. There were house slaves that worked in the plantation house and there were slaves that worked with the crops. Some slave women were nannies to the plantation children and others were cooks as well as did cleaning and laundry. Many of the male slaves worked as blacksmiths, repaired items, and planted/sowed/reaped crops, took care of the animals. ________________________________________________________________________ In the thirteen colonies, the slaves worked in the south like Florida in cotton fields and plantations. Their "masters" did not like to work so they told these slaves to do all the work for them. Soon, most of the slaves became free when they went to Canada with the help of Sir Guy Carleton. They had to hide to avoid being caught on the frontier between Canada and USA.

Levi Coffin was not a slave, he was a northern abolinishist who was very active in the undergroun railroad, which was a clandistian operation that helped run-away slaves make their way to freedom. Levi was known as a conductor. He helped to hide run-away slaves and also helped to transpor them to safe areas.
Levi Coffin, a quaker abolitionist was known as "The Grand Central Station" in the underground railroad. He and his wife Katherine comprised numerous tactics to hide escaping slaves in carriages and in their home. Many Quaker families assisted slaves in numerous ways to their road of freedom.

This was a coffin supposedly used by the criminal gangs to get rid of dead bodies or to smuggle or hide things in the 1920's. There would be a body in the coffin, but the bottom would be a "false bottom" because there would be another compartment underneath to hide another body or drugs, alcohol or cash.
in the underground railroad people who were not slaves would hang a certain clothing item of a certain color on their clolthes line. Then slaves would know to go into that house and people would hide them.
