The electoral college insures that even lessor populated areas are represented while electing a President and Vice president.
For Example: California and Texas have large populations, so one could use the popular vote from just thos large areas could drown out states like Wyomming with a small state population.
The electoral College was formed for a couple of reasons- one of the reasons was that- in the 1800's many people were not very highly educated. If they did not know what the presidential candidates were saying they were going to do, then how could they know who to vote for? that is why in the beginning, the electoral college was made up of highly educated individuals, that were literate, and could vote for the candidate who could have the most potential as President of the United States of America. Another reason the college was formed, was because states that are more populated , like California, wouldn't have more Representation than states like Rhode Island, that way every state is equal.
The U.S. Electoral College system is a system of indirect election. In accordance with Article II of the United States Constitution, electoral votes determine the President and Vice President of the United States. The electors are elected by direct popular vote in each state and each candidate for elector swears in advance whom he will vote for. The electors from each of the 50 U.S. states and the District of Columbia then cast their electoral votes to elect the President and Vice President of the United States.
This is how it was set up by the founding fathers who wrote the US Constitution and what the colonies/states agreed to when the joined the federal union that maks up the United States of America. The system has worked well for over 200 years and there has been no serious movement to change it,. (In the case you do not know, the Constitution can be changed and changes have been made.)
